World Day against Trafficking in Persons observed with focus on responding to the trafficking of children and young people
This year, World Day against Trafficking in Persons was observed on July 30 with the theme 'responding to the trafficking of children and young people' chosen by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), stated the UN website.

The UN highlighted the fact that almost a third of trafficking victims were children. “The theme draws attention to the issues faced by trafficked children and to possible action initiatives linked to safeguarding and ensuring justice for child victims,” informed the UNODC.

On this World Day against Trafficking in Persons, let us come together around the key issues of prevention, protection and prosecution to build a future where this crime cannot exist.

“Human trafficking takes many forms and knows no borders. Human traffickers too often operate with impunity, with their crimes receiving not nearly enough attention. This must change,” stated UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in his message.

According to an estimate of the UN around 21 million people are victims of forced labour and sexual exploitation globally. Additionally, women and girls comprise 71 per cent of human trafficking victims, it is informed.
