What is the true motive behind an organization's motto?
You go to any organization, you'll find an insignia and motto displayed on banners, walls, letter heads, business cards, publications, prospects, newsletters and websites.

But when you ask the stakeholders to recall and describe the meaning and purpose of the motto, around 90 per cent fail to do so.

I remember that when I joined a project on deputation, in the induction training, one hour discussion took place on the motto to understand and what does it entail or implicates to work effectively in the project.

We need to understand that the motto should not be created and used as fad or fashion. It should work as a challenge and make you strive to match your actions to meet your purpose. It should be articulated often to raise energy of the stakeholders and positively reinforce right actions for its realization.

Motto should be reminded before all meetings and initiation of all major activities, such as planning, reviewing, course corrections and validation meetings, to live up to promise expressed in the motto.

Motto of an organization, when articulated often, gets etched into the minds of the stakeholders to evoke trust, promise, quality and commitment to serve. When actions are planned, executed, reviewed for course correction keeping the motto as guiding post then it becomes transformational in nature.

When discussed with stakeholders, the motto provides the element of immediacy by making us taking a break and think. It can have a cognitive impact and possibility of staying in subconscious to move on. A motto has the potential to convert a job into service and build the right image for the organisation.

For example, has the motto in the form of a slogan "Power to People".

Here is my haiku on 'motto'.

Motto is an ideal
to work as axiom, precept
for acts of service.
