Dance drama on Ramayana by differently abled children to celebrate Diwali: A review
A dance drama was staged by differently abled children of Disha in Jaipur prior to the school for five-day Diwali break.

It was good effort by the students and staff which involved the song sung in the background with two differently abled children dressed as Lava and Kusha gesturing for sound symbols and pointing towards the stick-pictures being propped up from behind a curtain.

Though the students had practiced for a few days but required a good of prompting since the actions which were based on the imitation of gestures sung by a noted singer. The song was played by a computer connected to a public address system.

However, such performances require a lot of adaptations to make the presentation simple and short instead of replay of something written and sung professionally for normal people.  The differently abled children cannot pay attention to wordiness of normal people and cluttered pictures used as visual support.

There is dearth of literature for the differently abled people and performance arts have not been adapted for them by the professionals. Though the format of the presentation was reasonable, however, a need was felt to adjust the wordings and visual support by making them simple and timing to be adjusted to 3 to five minutes.

The institutes for education of differently abled children should do research and keep on reviewing their own work to create the relevant literature and performing art pieces adjusted to the needs of such people.

Some pointers are already available in the researches  done in the area of ‘physically integrated dance’ which propose that performance script should prepared beforehand which  be simple and short that includes gestures in the form of rhythmic movements.

However, the tryout of the performance format showed a relevance and promise to create such art pieces with adaptation to the needs of the differently abled children.
