Chinese automaker GAC to drop its brand name 'Trumpchi' for US market as it's too Trumpish
Chinese carmaker GAC has decided to rename the models it plans to introduce in the US market next year. The company will drop its brand 'Trumpchi' as it sounds connected with US President Donald Trump.

On Tuesday, at the Detroit auto show, a GAC spokesman while speaking the AFP said, "The name will change for the US market to avoid the wrong connotation or misunderstanding."

According to the company spokesman, Trumpchi means "legend" in Chinese language.

GAC, one of the largest vehicle manufacturers of China has been selling its Trumpchi brand in China for years. The company which sells around 500,000 cars in China and 13 other Asian and Middle Eastern countries plans to enter the US market in late 2019.

However, this is not a first instance that an automaker has been compelled to change its car's brand name. Indian automaker Tata Motors had to change its hatchback sedan Zica's name to Tiago in 2016, after the World Health Organization declared Zika virus an epidemic and global health emergency.
