The first decades of NATO were marked with the omnipresence of American military equipment across Europe. The US wished for nations to re-arm quickly so as to re-establish the balance of powers and reduce the risk of a new outbreak, and it was the only country within the alliance industrially in shape enough to supply adequately. In addition, the -sometimes free- distribution of military equipment reinforced the American hegemonic position. But since the 1970s, Europe has a solid military industry, with standards competing with the Americans.
